Ulysse Nardin - Imperial Blue

The invention of the sounding high quality cheap watches dates back to at least 1300, even before traditional dials and hands, when monumental clocks were designed to strike a precise time so that it could be heard from a distance or at night.

Over time, the clocks on these mechanisms got smaller and smaller until they were mounted on desk timepieces, then pocket watches, and finally wristwatches.

The grande sonnerie remains one of the most unique complications in haute horlogerie, and Ulysse Nardin certainly holds an important place in the history of the sonnerie. In 1893, at the Chicago World's Fair, it was the only watchmaker to win a gold medal for its minute repeater chronograph. With the new Imperial Blue, the Ulysse Nardin combines the sonnerie Westminster carillon that tells the time automatically and repeats the hours, quarters and minutes on demand with a flying tourbillon and a large date display.

The dial showcases a transparent mainplate on which a flying tourbillon floats at 6 o'clock. Blue sapphire bridges occupy the upper half of the dial, with a date indicator at 12 o'clock. The date can be quickly adjusted using the pusher at 2 o'clock.swiss watch men

The melody of the Grande Sonnerie sounds every hour, but an on-off button at 11 o'clock on the case back allows the watch owner to turn off the sound if desired. When correcting the time, the safety system stops the chime.

Energy management is one of the main challenges in developing such a complex watch, and Ulysse Nardin has implemented a truly efficient and elegant solution. The elapsed time as well as the chime, quarter-hour and minute sounds come from the same barrel. The barrel can be partially wound by actuating the minute repeater slider, or by turning the crown counterclockwise. When turned clockwise, the crown winds the second barrel dedicated to the movement, which has a 50-hour power reserve.
